A Demonized Generation? How the Enemy Captured the Minds of Our Youth

The result of the enemy’s battle plan to destroy a generation is sobering.

The three-decade drift was not accidental. It was a demonic strategy. The enemy knew that by controlling the inputs—the eye gate and the ear gate—he could disciple an entire generation.

What Christian families watched, listened to, and laughed at began to dull their spiritual discernment. They were desensitized to violence, adultery, fornication, and profanity. Righteous outrage began to fade into the background.

What parents tolerated, children embraced.

What children embraced, grandchildren celebrated.

As a result, the church that continued to feed on the steady diet the world offered saw its moral authority greatly diminished. Rather than calling the culture to repentance, they increasingly sought out ways to blend in.

The apostle Paul warned Timothy:

But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away! (2 Timothy 3:1-5 NKJV)

Because many in our churches have not turned away from these social ills, what has been the result?

  • In the 2020s, suicide has become the second-leading cause of death among teenagers.

  • From 2016-2022, monthly antidepressant prescribing rates for ages 12-25 jumped by 66.3%.

  • In 2024, about 48.4 million people in the US aged 12 or older had experienced a past-year substance use disorder.

  • 1.14 million abortions occurred in the US in 2024—marking the highest annual total in recent years, due to “self-man-aged drug-induced abortions occurring outside the formal health care system.”

The statistics can be analyzed in any number of ways, but the truth is the cultural norms for spirituality, or lack thereof, have taken a toll on our families, children, and youth. And the wreckage can be laid at the foot of the pulpit.

The greats of the past would agree:

A whole new generation of Christians has come up believing that it is possible to “accept” Christ without forsaking the world. That is a tragedy in the making. — A.W. Tozer

If Jesus preached the same message ministers preach today, He would never have been crucified. — Leonard Ravenhill

The reason so many Christians are cold, lifeless, and worldly is that preachers are afraid to preach the truth. They are afraid of losing their crowds, their salaries, their reputations. They have sold out. — David Wilkerson

Not only is the lack of moral values disintegrating today’s families, but the spirits driving the agenda for our generation’s values are also destroying the minds and well-being of our youth.

In the 2020s, a growing number of teenagers are reporting experiences that, historically, might have been described as encounters with the unseen world. Studies show that roughly 5-10 percent of teens report hearing voices or experiencing hallucinatory phenomena. In some surveys, as many as one in ten older adolescents hear voices, while 5 percent feel emotionally troubled by these experiences.

These are not isolated cases—they are happening across the nation, in ordinary homes, schools, and churches.

A few years ago, I preached in a tent meeting in a small town in Arkansas. The same year, I also ministered in a tent meeting in South Carolina. In each separate meeting, when I gave the altar call, a young man around the age of twelve came forward to receive Christ.

As I began praying, both boys began to weep. Both, living in separate states, told me they heard voices telling them to commit suicide. One of them actually saw a snake-like creature leave his body after I prayed in the name of Jesus.

Before Jesus delivered them, each gave an almost identical report of their conditions. They had not been able to sleep—they had not been able to study—and they were being goaded to end their lives.

Praise God, after prayer, they reported that those symptoms completely disappeared, and they had a strong desire to serve the Lord!

While modern science interprets these experiences as hallucinations—sometimes linked to trauma, mental health conditions, or neurological development—the spiritual reality cannot be ignored. The Bible repeatedly warns of a world alive with unseen forces. The apostle Paul reminds us that we are not fighting “flesh and blood” alone, but principalities and powers (Ephesians 6:12).

Can you hear the clarion call for today’s Church? Our youth are encountering the spiritual realm in ways that demand discipleship, protection, and teaching. We must wake up and take a long look at the dangers of a culture that dulls spiritual sensitivity: media, ungodly philosophies, demonized entertainment, and moral relativism can open doors to strong deception.

A teen hearing voices or sensing a spiritual presence may be wrestling with real demonic oppression, spiritual confusion, or emotional distress. They must be prepared to face their invisible enemy, prepared with accurate Bible teaching, the prayer of faith, and Holy Spirit discernment.

The ever-expanding prevalence of these experiences reminds us that spiritual warfare is not theoretical. It is personal and present, and it often begins in the hearts and minds of our youth. A ministry that ignores the unseen world leaves young people vulnerable. On the other hand, a ministry that perceives the dangers, teaches the entirety of Bible truth, and makes sure they are baptized in the Holy Spirit will help them stand boldly against the schemes of the enemy.

We must strive to consistently teach them to “Test all things; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil” (1 Thessalonians 5:21-22 NKJV).

Equipping our youth to discern the holy from the profane—the worldly from the godly—the good from the evil, is essential for their faith and for the health of the next generation.
