Revelation’s Number 7 Decoded: What the Apocalypse Reveals About the End Times

Excerpted from They Lied to You About the Rapture.

The word apocalypse comes from the Greek word apokalypsis, which means “unveiling” or “revelation.”

Apocalypse (noun)

Etymology: From the Greek word apokalypsis, meaning “unveiling” or “revelation.

1. The uncovering of something hidden: The disclosure of knowledge or revelation, especially in a prophetic context.

2. In biblical terms: A specific reference to the book of Revelation, the final book of the Bible, which reveals the ultimate destiny of the world, the return of Christ, and the final judgment.

3. Common usage: Often misunderstood as referring to the end of the world or catastrophic destruction, but in its original meaning, it simply refers to a dramatic revealing or unveiling of truth.

Example: The apocalypse in the book of Revelation unveils the true nature of who Jesus is and what His plans are for His Church, Israel, and the world.

It does not mean the end of the world as many believe. Rather, it means “to reveal something that has been hidden.” So, when we read Revelation, we are reading an unveiling of Jesus Christ, an exposure of His nature and His plan for humanity.

Now get this, the Holy Spirit’s primary mission, as Jesus says in John 16:13 (KJV), is to reveal Christ to us: “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.”

Through this revelation, we gain a deeper understanding of the Father, for Jesus came to reveal the Father, and the Spirit reveals Jesus. Many believers don’t realize that this is what the book of Revelation is all about: knowing Jesus more deeply. It is not about satisfying our curiosity regarding the future, nor is it meant to scare us with images of beasts, plagues, or judgments. The main point of the book is to reveal who Jesus is now as King of kings and Lord of lords.

The Most Important Subject in Revelation

What is the most frequently mentioned topic in the book of Revelation, aside from Jesus? Take a minute right now to make a few guesses. This is important because if you can understand this key, the purpose of the book will become clear to you. What do you think it is? Many assume it might be the antichrist, the plagues, or the final battle of Armageddon. But you might be surprised to learn that the most prominent theme in the book of Revelation is the number seven.

Throughout the 22 chapters of Revelation, the number seven

appears at least 54 times. This repetition isn’t accidental. Let’s look at the significance of this number:

  • Seven Churches (Revelation 1:4)

  • Seven Spirits of God (Revelation 1:4)

  • Seven Golden Lampstands (Revelation 1:12)

  • Seven Stars (Revelation 1:16)

  • Seven Seals (Revelation 5:1)

  • Seven Angels and Seven Trumpets (Revelation 8:2)

  • Seven Thunders (Revelation 10:3)

  • Seven Bowls (Revelation 17:1)

  • Seven Kings (Revelation 17:10)

The number seven in Scripture represents divine perfection or completeness. From Genesis to Revelation, the number seven marks the fulfillment of God’s purposes. In Genesis, God completed creation in six days and rested on the seventh, marking the perfection of His work. In Revelation, seven signifies the completion of God’s plan for redemption and judgment. It’s the number of fulfillment, rest, and divine order.

In Revelation, the repeated use of the number seven is God’s way of reminding us that what we are reading is not just about chaos or destruction. It is about the completion of His plan. Everything He started in Genesis, every promise and every prophecy, finds its fulfillment in this book. Revelation is the final word, the culmination of all that God has been working toward since the beginning of time.

The Fullness of Christ’s Revelation

As you dive into Revelation, you will begin to see that the three dimensions of Jesus revealed in the New Testament are fully realized in this book. He is revealed as:

  • Savior: In the Gospels, we encounter Jesus as the Savior, the One who rescues us from sin.

  • Lord: In the Epistles, we are taught how to live under the lordship of Jesus, submitting to His authority.

  • King: In Revelation, we see Jesus as the King of kings, the One who reigns over all. His rule is supreme, His authority final.

Understanding these dimensions helps us grasp the full picture of who Jesus is. He is not just our Savior and Lord; He is the rightful King who will return to set all things in order.

Revelation: The Final Unveiling

It bears repeating that the book of Revelation was not written to satisfy our curiosity about the future. Nor is it just about creating a timeline of events. It’s really about preparing us to recognize Him, to understand His plan, and to live in anticipation of His return. When we approach Revelation with this understanding, the mysteries begin to unravel. We see Jesus as He truly is: glorious, powerful, and victorious.

As you develop a Maranatha Mindset, you’ll likely find a growing hunger to understand Bible prophecy. As you dive into the book of Revelation, don’t be discouraged by the complex imagery or symbolism you may encounter. You now understand that the one word summing up all New Testament eschatology is “Watch.” You’ve also grasped the secret of the sevens, giving you a key to translate these passages. No matter how intricate the language appears, the underlying message is always the same: Watch for Him to complete His work. With that perspective, you have everything you truly need to guide you through Revelation’s mysteries.

We must study this book in God’s Word carefully and prayerfully. We are the generation that needs to know Revelation more than any generation that has come before us. The world is becoming darker, and as the day of Christ’s return draws closer, the truths in this book will shine brighter, illuminating the path ahead for those who have ears to hear.
