5 Daily Habits That Release Holy Spirit Power (#3 Will Transform Your Life!)
Excerpted from Breaking Open the Fountain of Your Deep.
Living in the power of the Spirit isn’t automatic; it requires intentional cultivation through consistent spiritual disciplines.
These practices aren’t religious duties but relational connections that maintain our vital link with the flow of God’s Spirit. Let’s explore the essential daily disciplines for sustaining Spirit-empowered living:
1. Cultivating the Secret Place of Prayer
But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly (Matthew 6:6).
The secret place of prayer is where we maintain and deepen our connection with the Holy Spirit. It’s not just a physical location but a heart posture of intimate communion with God. In this place, away from public performance and distraction, we receive fresh infilling, divine guidance, and spiritual strengthening.
Effective secret place prayer involves:
Setting aside dedicated, undistracted time with God daily.
Balancing structure with spontaneity, allowing room for the Spirit to direct.
Incorporating various forms of prayer, including worship, intercession, and praying in tongues.
Listening as much as speaking, creating space to hear God’s voice.
Journaling revelations, promptings, and answers to prayer.
This consistent communion becomes the wellspring from which all other spiritual activity flows. Without it, our public ministry eventually becomes performance rather than power, technique rather than transformation. With it, we maintain a continuous flow of fresh oil that prevents burnout and sustains spiritual impact.
2. Saturating in Scripture
This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success (Joshua 1:8).
The Spirit-empowered life is fundamentally Scripture-based. The Holy Spirit always works in alignment with and through God’s Word. His leading never contradicts Scripture but often illuminates it with fresh application and insight. Regular immersion in the Bible provides the foundation and framework for genuine spiritual experience.
Effective Scripture engagement involves:
Daily reading with an expectation of divine insight beyond mere information.
Meditating on passages throughout the day, allowing them to saturate your spirit.
Memorizing key verses that address your current season or challenges.
Studying consistently and thoroughly to gain a clear biblical understanding.
Applying Scripture specifically to current situations and decisions.
The relationship between the Word and the Spirit creates a powerful synergy. The Word without the Spirit’s enlightening becomes dry knowledge; the Spirit without the Word’s foundation can lead to unstable emotionalism. But together, they produce balanced, fruitful spiritual life.
3. Praying in the Spirit Consistently
Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints (Ephesians 6:18).
As we’ve discussed in previous chapters, praying in tongues is a tremendous spiritual resource. Making this gift a consistent part of daily life—not just during church services or designated prayer times—significantly enhances spiritual effectiveness and sensitivity.
Practical integration of tongues includes:
Starting your day with a period of praying in the Spirit to attune your spiritual senses.
Utilizing drive time, exercise, or household chores as opportunities to pray in tongues.
Praying in the Spirit briefly before making significant decisions.
Responding to spiritual resistance or heaviness by activating your prayer language.
Incorporating times of singing in the Spirit as part of your worship.
This consistent exercise of your spiritual language builds up your inner self (1 Corinthians 14:4), enhances your spiritual sensitivity, and provides supernatural prayer coverage for situations beyond your natural understanding. It serves as a continuous link to the river of the Spirit flowing within you.
4. Walking in Faith-Filled Expectancy
But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him (Hebrews 11:6).
The Spirit-empowered life thrives in an atmosphere of active faith and expectancy. This isn’t occasional optimism but a constant anticipation of God’s supernatural involvement in everyday life. It’s living with spiritual antennas raised, expecting divine appointments, miraculous provision, and Holy Spirit guidance as normal experiences.
Cultivating this expectancy involves:
Starting each day declaring God’s faithfulness and power.
Identifying opportunities for God’s intervention in ordinary situations.
Maintaining “radar lock” on the Spirit’s promptings throughout the day.
Recognizing divine setups and responding with bold faith.
Celebrating and testifying to God’s interventions, both large and small.
This expectant posture transforms ordinary days into supernatural adventures. Rather than compartmentalizing the miraculous to church services or mission trips, you begin to experience God’s intervention in grocery stores, workplaces, family gatherings, and random encounters. Life becomes an exciting partnership with the Holy Spirit.
5. Maintaining Spirit-Led Community
Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching (Hebrews 10:25).
The Spirit-filled life is not meant to be lived in isolation. Regular connection with other Spirit-empowered believers provides encouragement, accountability, confirmation, and synergistic power. While personal devotion is essential, corporate expression amplifies individual spiritual effectiveness.
Beneficial spiritual community includes:
Regular participation in a church that values the Holy Spirit’s presence and gifts.
Smaller fellowship groups where deeper sharing and ministry can occur.
Strategic relationships with believers who complement your gifts and calling.
Accountability partners who both encourage and challenge your spiritual walk.
Mentoring connections, both receiving from those ahead and investing in those following.
These relationships create a supportive spiritual environment that sustains growth during challenging seasons and multiplies effectiveness during times of opportunity. They provide practical training grounds for exercising spiritual gifts and confirmation for divine guidance.
Walking in Spiritual Authority
A key aspect of the Spirit-empowered life is understanding and exercising the spiritual authority Jesus delegated to believers. This isn’t about self-promotion or domination but about representing Christ’s Kingdom interests with confidence and power.
Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you (Luke 10:19).
Spiritual authority flows from your position in Christ, not your personal perfection or performance. Delegated power enables you to enforce Christ’s victory in specific situations and circumstances. Understanding this authority transforms how you approach challenges, obstacles, and spiritual opposition.
Practically exercising spiritual authority involves:
Speaking with Divine Authorization. Your words carry power when aligned with God’s purposes and spoken from a place of relationship with Him. This includes commanding sickness to leave, declaring freedom over bondage, and speaking God’s promises over seemingly impossible situations. Like Jesus, you’re authorized to speak to storms, mountains, fig trees, and anything else that contradicts God’s will in your assigned territory.
Establishing Boundaries Against Darkness. Spiritual authority includes setting and maintaining boundaries against demonic influence in your life, family, church, and community. This isn’t fearful preoccupation with the enemy, but confident enforcement of the limitations Christ has placed on dark powers through His victory at the Cross.
Releasing Kingdom Atmosphere. Like Daniel maintained a Hebrew atmosphere in Babylon, you can release the atmosphere of God’s Kingdom wherever you go. This might mean bringing peace into conflict, joy into depression, or faith into fear-dominated environments. Your presence, filled with the Holy Spirit, becomes a portal for Heaven’s reality to infiltrate earth’s situations.
Administering Divine Resources. Spiritual authority includes stewardship of Kingdom resources—not just financial but spiritual, relational, and functional assets needed to accomplish God’s purposes. Like Joseph in Egypt, Spirit-led believers often find themselves positioned to administer resources far beyond their natural capacity through supernatural wisdom and favor.
This authority doesn’t operate independently but flows from your submission to Christ and sensitivity to the Holy Spirit’s direction. It’s never about building personal kingdoms but always about extending Christ’s influence through humble, confident obedience to His leading.
