Want Accurate Prophecy? How God’s Word Sharpens Your Prophetic Voice
Romans 12:6 (NKJV) states we prophesy in proportion to our faith.
But where does faith come from? Scripture is clear: “…faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God” (Romans 10:17 NKJV). The Word of God is the very foundation of the prophetic. It is the spark that ignites faith and the fire that consumes doubt, sin, and the works of the enemy. A truly prophetic person is first and foremost a person of the Word. If you desire to operate in the prophetic, you must build your life on the foundation of the written Word of God.
The Bible: The Greatest Prophet
Throughout history, people have asked, “Who is the greatest prophet?” In the Old Testament, Moses, Elijah, and Samuel were considered some of the most powerful prophetic voices. Yet, during Jesus’ earthly ministry, He declared:
…Among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he (Matthew 11:11 NKJV).
Even with all the mighty prophets who came before, Jesus identified John as the greatest of the Old Covenant prophets. But then He made an astonishing statement—those in the New Covenant are greater than John! Why? Because we have access to the Word of God in full revelation. But if I were to answer the question of who the greatest prophet is today, my answer would be simple: The Bible is the greatest prophet. The Word of God is the ultimate, infallible, and eternal prophetic voice on earth. It is God-breathed, sharper than any two-edged sword, and able to discern the thoughts and intents of the heart (Hebrews 4:12). The Bible is not just a book—it is alive. The Holy Spirit, the same Spirit who breathed life into Adam in the Garden of Eden, has also breathed into every page of Scripture. The power of the prophetic flows directly from the power of the Word.
The Word Produces Faith
Faith does not come by feelings. Faith does not come by signs and wonders. Faith comes by hearing the Word of God. If you want to grow in the prophetic, you must first grow in the Word. Many people want to be powerful prophetic voices, but they neglect the study of Scripture. They rely on dreams, visions, and impressions without a foundation in the Bible. This is dangerous. The purest prophetic voices in history were always people of the Word. The prophets of old were immersed in the law of Moses and the writings of the prophets. They understood the Scriptures and prophesied from a place of deep knowledge of God’s Word. Jesus Himself is called the Word made flesh (John 1:14). The Word is the maximum prophet. When you prophesy, you are speaking from the voice of God, and the most trustworthy source of prophecy is the Bible.
A Living Example: Prophet Dick Mills
I remember seeing a powerful prophetic minister when I was younger—Prophet Dick Mills. Dick Mills had a prophetic ministry that was unique. When he prophesied, he didn’t just give people vague words or impressions. Instead, he quoted scripture after scripture, giving people precise passages that spoke directly to their situations. He had committed almost the entire Bible to memory. But why did he do this? Because in his early years, he was heavily criticized for giving personal prophecies. Many of the traditional Pentecostal circles he was in rejected the idea of personal prophecy, believing that prophecy should only be for the corporate church, not individuals. Instead of backing down, Dick Mills made a decision: He would prophesy using only the Bible. He committed himself to memorizing the Word so that every prophecy he gave would be straight from Scripture. I would sit in meetings at Victory Bible Institute in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he would prophesy over people for hours. Every single word he gave was wall-to-wall Scripture. And every time, the Word would come alive. This is a powerful example of what it means to be a prophetic person of the Word.
What You Feed on Will Shape Your Prophetic Flow
Jesus said, “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things…. For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” (Matthew 12:35,34 NKJV). If you want your prophetic flow to be pure, powerful, and accurate, then you must fill your heart with the Word of God. A prophetic person must be very careful about what they allow into their heart.
If you fill your heart with fear, you will prophesy from a place of fear.
If you fill your heart with bitterness, you will prophesy with a sharp and critical spirit.
If you fill your heart with the Word of God, you will prophesy with faith, power, and purity.
The cleansing power of the Word keeps your heart pure. As David prayed in Psalm 51:10 NKJV, “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” Psalm 119:9 NKJV tells us, “How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word.” If you want your prophetic ministry to grow, then your love for the Word must grow.
The Danger of Relying Only on Prophetic Gifts
I want to challenge prophetic people, especially those in pulpit ministry. It is easy to rely on a prophetic gift alone. If your word of knowledge is strong, people will be drawn to you because you have something unique. But a prophet must not rely on the gift alone. The Bible is enough. There have been times when I have walked into my church, and I can feel the pull—people want me to prophesy. They want to hear a word from the Lord. But sometimes I will stand before them and say, “Today, I’m not going to prophesy. Today, I’m going to teach the Word of God.” And you know what? That has to be enough. People must learn that the Bible is the ultimate prophecy. They don’t need a special word—they need the written Word. There is nothing wrong with prophetic ministry—it is powerful and necessary. But we must never allow people to elevate the gift above the Word. If we fill our hearts with Scripture, then when the time comes, God will fill our mouths with prophecy.
A Call to the Prophetic Generation
I want to challenge you:
Read the Bible until it begins to read you.
Fill your heart with the Word until the Word overflows from your mouth.
Don’t just seek prophetic encounters—seek the Word of God.
The prophetic ministry is not just about dreams, visions, and impressions. It is about declaring what God has already spoken. If we love the Word, immerse ourselves in the Word, and speak the Word, then our prophetic voice will be sharp, powerful, and accurate. I believe God is raising a new breed of prophetic people—people who are not just anointed but anchored. Not just gifted but grounded. Not just hearing from God but rooted in His Word. If you want to prophesy in proportion to your faith, then let the Word of God fill your heart, your mind, and your spirit. Then, when you open your mouth, you will speak as one who declares the very oracles of God (1 Peter 4:11).
